WORKING ON BEHALF OF OUR MEMBERS
Our mission is to drive sustainable demand for Northern Irish wool in order to maximise returns for our members.

Meet Crosby Cleland- County Down, County Representative

Crosby Cleland plays a vital role in advocating for wool producers, actively supporting and promoting their interests within the industry.

We recently had the opportunity to engage in a discussion with Crosby. Please find the details below.

“I'm Crosby Cleland, and I run a sheep farm with 700 ewes in Saintfield, County Down.

On my farm, I raise breeds like Lleyn, Highlander, and Aberfield. For the terminal sires, I use Primera, Aberblack, and Charolais. I mostly work on the farm by myself, but I also operate an agricultural fencing business and work alongside other part-time farmers.

I've been involved with the regional committee for over 30 years, stepping in after Gerard Fury.”

What changes have you seen in the past 30 years?

“Over the years, I've seen a lot of changes, especially in prices. While the quality of British and Ulster wool has greatly improved, it's unfortunate that global efforts haven't translated into better prices for us.”

What do you enjoy about being a County Representative and member of the Regional Committee?

“I really admire the training programs for shearers. For over 30 years, we've hosted shearing courses on our farm, and it's fantastic to see people of all ages eager to learn the correct techniques for shearing sheep. I also enjoy connecting with shearers from other counties and across the UK. The international connections through Ulster Wool provides valuable insights into what's happening in the wool industry worldwide.”

Why should farmers support Ulster Wool?

“Supporting Ulster Wool is crucial because it’s our best chance to secure funding for our wool. They are a dedicated team, and their professional efforts are making progress as time goes on.”
