Farmers encouraged to utilise improving wool markets 9 October 2024
The Ulster Farmers’ Union and Ulster Wool are urging farmers to deliver their wool to their local wool depot and benefit from a better return with the market showing signs of improving. This follows the publication of recent data that as of the end of September 2024, the volume of wool received by Ulster Wool from members in Northern Ireland was down by 15% year on year, creating a shortfall of 137 tonnes. A summer of Shearing Records 22 July 2024
This summer we will see three shearing records being attempted. The 9-hour British Ewe record was beaten on the 13th of July by Meirion Evans. The 3rd of August will see Nick Greaves take on the 8-hour World Lamb Shearing record and finally Una Cameron will attempt to shear more than 458 ewes in 9-hours. Read Blog
Ulster Wool – Update 22 July 2024
Ulster Wool’s grading depots and network of drop-off locations across Northern Ireland provide a service to all members regardless of the type and quality of wool produced, volume or location.
Once the wool has been delivered, every fleece is individually graded which determines the grade and quality. Grading every fleece adds value to member's wool as this separates the better quality from the poorer with the better-quality wool achieving a higher price which is then returned to the member. Ulster Wool has announced a strategic investment by its parent company, British Wool, in NexGen Tree Shelters Ltd., a pioneering company specialising in bio and environmentally degradable tree shelters, hedging and vole guards made from wool.

Wool returns stable despite a smaller clip. 21 May 2024
Following a reduced wool clip in 2023, wool returns are similar to last year for Ulster Wool members in 2024.
Most core grades are up 1p or 2p per kg, while Mountain grades are slightly lower, with the overall lower wool intake weight impacting the returns.
Brendan Kelly, Chairman of Ulster Wool, says: “Prices strengthened in the autumn but have weakened again over the last two months with Mountain wool types struggling all season. British Wool’s auction prices for the season are on a par with New Zealand. Read Press Release
Depot News… 24 April 2024
Did you know during April the depot was in ‘maintenance mode’?
This means that grading is paused until the start of the new season in May. There is a lot to do; from servicing all the machinery to ensuring all skeps are tared, when grading recommences. Read Blog

Ulster Wool enhances young farmers exclusive training offer 8 January 2024
Ulster Wool and the Young Farmers’ Club of Ulster (YFCU) have enjoyed a strong relationship and collaborated in many different areas over the years including the Young Farmers Clubs (YFC) training offer.
This will be the 6th year Ulster Wool and YFCU have worked together and this year the training offer for young farmers has been extended. In previous years, Ulster Wool offered young farmers an opportunity to attend a beginner shearing course if this was a first-time course. This year this exclusive offer has been extended to include all young farmers, regardless of level and how many courses they have previously attended. Professional Sheep Shearer smashes the Irish shearing record 2 August 2023
Tom Perry, a 33-year-old professional Sheep Shearer and Farmer from Strabane, County Tyrone was successful last month in shattering the Irish 9 Hour Solo Lamb Shearing Record previously set by Stanley Allingham in 2019. The world faces the most severe recession in its history due to the Covid-19 epidemic. The global market for cross bred wool has been shut since February and remains closed. February to May is normally the busiest selling period of the year.
